Located between the Pukenui and Otaika Reserves, These forests are home to many of New Zealand's treasured species like kiwi and short-tailed bats. Māra Kokotoha is being returned to native bush to help provide a wildlife corridor through disturbed land. It already hosts a variety of native birds and animals, and even has frequently seen bats. With work beginning in 2022, this rural property of 6 hectares in has had hundreds of natives planted, invasive plants removed, and is actively pest-controlled. Historically this land was forest, specifically "volcanic taraire forest" (an endangered ecosystem) but for the last century has been host of cows, sheep, and pigs. However, we are committed to returning this land to primarily native plants. We will be reserving some areas for a food forest, camping, and our living and gardening needs. However, the vast majority is to be replanted with natives to encourage a safe habitat for native animals. We are installation artists ourselves and have already started installing artworks throughout the property. Ultimately we hope to host artists for retreats and campouts, art installations, green tech experiments, couchsurfers, campers, and more. Hi we need volunteers to help us maintain our compost at CBEC in exchange for some compost to take home! Every second Tuesday of the month we need extra hands. Eco Solutions collect paper towels from kindis, and the waste from the Kaitaia Market and compost it, we then gift it back to the kindis and kura, we would love a few extra hands to turn the compost every month, and lawn clippings, we are happy for helpers to take home compost in return! Do you have items you want to trade for time? We have a couple of raffles planned, one with a focus on Winter Wellness (we will be selling tickets at the Hāwera Winter Festival), and Kai Resilience (We'll be drawing this one is spring at one of our workshops). If you think you have something we could put into a box/basket to raffle off please get in touch! Think warm blankets or slippers, hot water bottle cover (unsewn or knitted), wheat bags, dried lemons, honey, anything you enjoy in Winter! For the Kai Resilience one anything garden or kitchen related would be wonderful.

Do you have a spare mobile phone kicking around that you don’t need? It needs to be able to run the Garmin inReach App, and be supported for os updates. We got some funding from the. Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal Trust to help our members be better prepared and networked when we get extreme weather events etc. Cyclone Tam put us to the test and found us wanting; one of our coordinators was overseas, and our ‘Mission Control’ was on leave out of town! This highlighted the need for dedicated phones that can be passed on when going away, or even off sick etc so that we still have all the contacts and satellite text capability no matter what. We have funds in the grant budget for running the system, but not for actual phones, at least certainly not new! If you can’t afford to donate your old phone send us details and how much you’re looking for it and we’ll get back to you if funds allow. If you can offer us a phone please let us know details etc first rather than just send it in and we’ll let you know where it needs to go! The He Awhi Rito Community Compost bins (no 8 1st Avenue Whangarei) are in a dire state! We (Judy, Janey, me and Clint) will be in Whangarei on Tuesday 20th to dig out gluggy compost and mix in greens/carbons and AIR to get them pumping again. If anyone can lend a hand, and/or has greens or browns they can contribute, please get in touch or turn up between 10.30-4 (I'm driving down from Kaitaia to help, so wont be there early!!). The secondary compost bins are also falling apart, any handy builders out there that have some time to lend a hand, Clint would appreciate the help! These bins process event compostable waste and feed into the community gardens, so any help here will also help our Whangarei community.
